The Benefits of Being Fiercely Independent

Sponsored by Zappos

I have always been an independent person. When I was 17 years old, I moved to New York City alone without knowing a single person or having any family nearby. People told me I was crazy and took bets on how long it would take for me to go back home. Last week while I was back in NYC, it was surreal... I was sitting in an Uber, stuck in traffic, and looked out my window to realize we were right in front of my old dorm building. I was able to see in the window of the room I stayed in and had one of those amazing life moments when you feel so damn proud of the person you have become.

I first came to the city as a girl who was searching for her purpose, it was a bumpy road with many challenges and life lessons, but I returned as a woman who knows exactly who she is and why she is here. I remember how it felt to take a life-changing risk and face the fear of failure on a daily basis. I have learned that even if we aren't successful in what we thought we were supposed to do, as long as we are willing to try, we can be lead to where we are meant to be.

If you never answer the call of your intuition because you let fear get in the way, that is the only failure in life you can't recover from. Sometimes, you just have to plant both feet firmly on the ground and know that where you are right now is an important part of your story. All you have to do is just keep moving forward until you find your place in the world. I can honestly say that being fiercely independent from a young age altered the course of my life for the better!
